For decades, the Internet has been referred to as the Information Highway, and when you think about it, it has really changed our lives dramatically. It seems that the term, “Information Highway,” doesn’t really describe the wide range of possibilities the Internet has to offer.
Put simply, the Internet uses phone lines and satellite to connect millions (and possibly billions) of computers across the world. It’s really the largest form of communication known to man.
In addition, the Internet consists of everything you can imagine, from video to audio, and from text to graphics. Millions of people use the Internet daily in order to access all kinds of information, purchase goods and, most of all, communicate.
You need a computer with modem and Internet Browser software to access this information world. When you have provided yourself with that, you need to dial in (or connect via WiFi) an Internet Service Provider, which will allow you to access the whole web through its servers.
You can also choose between a variety of Internet (or web) browsers, depending on the operating system or platform you use. For example, if you use Linux or Unix, then Mozilla would be the browser of choice. On the other hand, if you use a Windows platform, then you would use Internet Explorer or Netscape for your web browser.
To perform searches on the Internet for products, services, and information, you use a search engine like Google or Yahoo. By entering keywords in a blank field, you can display links to thousands of different web sites containing the information you need.
There’s really no brief explanation of the Internet because the topics are endless. But hopefully this article gives you a broad idea of what the Internet is, and how you can use it. The Internet has many applications and uses; however, its biggest use is to look up information, which is why it was dubbed the Information Highway.
