Evaluating Whether to Download a Program

It may seem as if each time you sit down at the computer, you are receiving an invitation to download some new software or program. That’s because advancements in computers are happening on an almost daily basis.

Some of the software and programs are very useful. They allow you faster access to the Internet or enable you to use the information you have accessed from a website more efficiently. Others are, unfortunately, simply a waste of hard drive space and may even contain dangerous viruses. Each time you are given the opportunity to download new programs or software, take a moment to look at the content carefully. You may already have a similar program installed.

If the new program is an updated version of the one you have installed, then of course you probably want to go ahead and download the new one. If, however, it’s just another program offering basically the same thing you already have, you may just want to keep the one you are currently using.

If new programs or software come with trial periods, you might want to take advantage of them. This way, you can determine if you want to permanently download them.

If you do decide to download a new program or software, it will most likely come with a toolbar. These features make it easier to navigate through the program–you simply have to point to a specific icon and click to initiate a particular action. Without toolbars, you may have to use several keypad buttons to achieve the same action.

Many toolbars are designed so that they only appear when the specific program or software is activated. This makes it easier for users because your screen won’t be so cluttered. If this is a problem, it may be possible to minimize unused toolbars at least temporarily, and then restore them when you have finished using a certain program or software.
