Internet Search Tips

Searching the Internet can become an overwhelming challenge with the millions if not billions of web pages out there. If you perform an ineffective search, your results will turn up irrelevant topics and pages. If you just follow a few helpful tips and tricks, your searches will become much more efficient and time saving — and you’ll actually find the info you were searching for.

Be specific. Make sure your search string includes more specific terms rather than generalities. For instance if you are searching for real estate, don’t search “real estate Utah.” Try entering what you really are looking for “homes for sale, Salt Lake City, five bedroom, two bath,” and you’ll eliminate many extraneous sites.

Using quotation marks around your search string will return results with that exact phrase rather than a combination of the words. You can use wild card searches by using asterisks placed at the end of words to include all variations of that word. Try using synonyms. Perhaps your search is just not returning as many results as you’d like. Trying entering synonyms for your search terms; for example, use auto rather than car, dog rather than canine, and so on.

Interestingly, excluding some words may cause a better search result. For instance, you could search Bronco sports and you’ll end up with pages about wild horses, as well as other pages about the Denver football team. Use the “advanced search” features found on many search engines. This is a relatively easy way to narrow down your search. This features is usually easy enough for even beginners to use. You may find yourself staring at pages upon pages of results that are just not what you are looking for. So simply abandon that search term or terms and start over using some of the above tips.
